EASLEY — The city of Easley has received another addition to the Upstate Heritage Quilt Trail, sponsored by the Pickens County ATAX Commission. The pattern is called Basket of Lilies and the original cloth quilt is owned by Kent Dykes of the City of Easley.

It is first referenced in the Ladies Art Company in 1897 and again in March 8, 1933 Home Arts Studio, Cincinnati Enquirer as the Royal Dutch Tulip and Vase. Reference The Quilters Album of Patchwork Patterns by Jenny Beyer.

The quilt was made by his grandmother, Katie Jamima Walker Dykes (1886-1960) sometime during the early 1930’s in Irwinville, Ga.

The pattern originated in the 1920’s. The family moved in 1937 from their farm to Brunswick, Ga., where jobs were more available during the Great Depression.

This quilt was the favorite bed cover of Kent as a youth growing up in Brunswick. It was put away in the 1980’s due to its fragile condition but is a valued family keepsake.

The quilt block is displayed on the wall of Albertson Enterprise, owned by Donna G. Albertson at 118 E. Main St. in Easley, and the original cloth quilt will be displayed in the Easley Museum upon its completion.
