WALHALLA — The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is trying to determine if a weekend shooting in Westminster was a case of homicide or self-defense after the investigation showed both the shooter and the victim were carrying weapons.
Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis said Jesse Eugene Mulkey, 33, of Westminster, was shot in the chest at 330 Brock Road sometime before 10 p.m. Sunday.
On Wednesday, Sheriff Mike Crenshaw released a statement that no charges will be filed until the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division can determine which guns were fired and how many times they were fired. He said it could take a few weeks for that information to come back.
“According to our investigation, Mr. Mulkey and the shooter both had weapons on their person when this incident occurred. The Sheriff’s Office is continuing our investigation and is currently attempting to make a determination if this is a case of murder or self-defense,” Crenshaw said.
Crenshaw said Mulkey and the shooter knew the female who lives at the Brock Road home.
“Once again, this is an active and ongoing investigation and due to that fact, we cannot release any further information at this time,” the sheriff said. “As of right now, no one has been arrested and no charges have been filed. Therefore, we will not releasing any information regarding the identity of the shooter.”
