Register now for TAM YAM summer camp

PICKENS – Registration is open through July 1 for the Traditional Arts and Music Camp to be held July 20 through July 24 at the Pickens Recreational Center.

The day camp is sponsored by the Young Appalachian Musicians program, but it is open to all rising third through ninth graders from anywhere, not just those who participate in the YAM after-school program.

In the mornings, campers will learn traditional methods of playing guitar, mandolin, banjo or fiddle, at all levels, led by experienced local musicians. Afternoons will be filled with outdoor games, nature activities, traditional arts and crafts, clogging and square dancing, water activities, Native American lore, Appalachian cooking and more.

New to the camp this year will be workshops on the farm chores of yesterday (including milking cows, churning butter and weaving), demonstrations of trick cycling (at the Bike Park) and boating/kayaking (at Town Creek), and archery. Previous favorites, like instrument-making workshops, will return.

Registration information is available on the YAM web site at www.YAMupstate.com, or by contacting Betty McDaniel, director of the YAM program, by email at mcdanibw1@gmail.com.
