SHINE to host health fair on March 7

PICKENS COUNTY — SHINE Soup Kitchen, along with The Dream Center and the Clemson University nursing program, are presenting a health fair March 7 to address topics of concern to Pickens County residents and parents.

A wide variety of topics will be covered including first aid, diabetes, family planning, mental health, nutrition, and hygiene with information on each subject. Attendees will also be provided with a free blood pressure and/or vision screening as well.

The program was initiated through Clemson University, whose nursing students wanted to provide the fair for clients of SHINE, and the idea was then expanded to include the general public. Admission is free.

“They (nursing students) wanted to give our clients an opportunity to learn some important information about nutrition and health and it was decided to offer the entire event to the community as well,” said Erica Woods, program director. “This is a big event, especially for those with children, because this is going to bring some important information to the community. Our clients had expressed an interest in learning about some of the topics and from there it grew into the health fair for the public.”

Screenings and the information shared also is free.

“A lot of these topics are vital to families and children and the nursing students and members of the school are well-educated and have a lot to offer,” Woods said. “We hope the community comes out to not only support this event, but our clients as well, and learn a little about health and what we do here at SHINE.”

The SHINE Health Fair will be held at the SHINE Soup Kitchen and The Dream Center gymnasium located at 111 Hillcrest Drive in Easley. It will run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
