PICKENS COUNTY — The Fort Prince George Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held its annual awards day recently to recognize outstanding students from local middle schools and high schools in the categories of American History, Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps and Good Citizen.

Nominated by teachers and counselors, each student receives a certificate of excellence, a lapel pin or medal and a gift card. Students and teachers are invited to attend a DAR meeting to be introduced as friends and family join in to congratulate them.

Anne Kilpatrick, Regent, noted that “many students are excited to receive the award because their mother or grandparent had won it in the past.”

The awards are all part of the DAR’s commitment to the mission of encouraging education, historic preservation and patriotism.

Carolyn Nations is chair of the American History Committee, Karen Garrett is chair of the National Defense Committee and Julie Thompson is chair of the DAR Good Citizen Committee.

This year’s winners in American History were Olivia Durham of Easley Middle School; Nora Whelchel of Liberty Middle School and Bryce Pope of Pickens Middle School.

This year’s winners in JROTC were Daniela Vallecillo of Liberty High School and Cadet Major Carole Thomas of Pickens High School.

The DAR Good Citizen awards went to Reilly Gray Kelley of Easley High School, Courtney Bryant of Liberty High School and Riley Nicholson of Pickens High School.
