SWU signs six for men’s basketball for 2016-17 season

CENTRAL — Southern Wesleyan University has signed six new players for the 2016-17 men’s basketball season.

“We are still young, but with the addition of these outstanding student-athletes, the pieces to the puzzle are coming together at the right time,” said Charles Wimphrie, head men’s basketball coach. “My freshmen gained valuable minutes on the floor last season. I am delighted that these new student-athletes made the choice to attend Southern Wesleyan University to continue their academic and athletic careers.”

The signees include the following:

• Darrian Brown, a 6-3 point guard from Roswell, Ga., who averaged 11.4 points, 7.0 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game while at Centennial High School.

• Darryl Gerald, a 6-4 guard from Spotsylvania, Va., who averaged 18.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 1.0 steals per game while at Courtland High School. He shot 52 percent from the field and 88 percent from the free-throw line.

• Shawn Lipscomb, a 6-2 combo guard from Durham, N.C., who averaged 33.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 3.5 steals per game while at Cresset Christian Academy. He led the state of North Carolina in scoring in 2014. He helped Bob Jones University defeat USC Upstate last season.

• Daryl Myers, a 5-10 point guard from Fredericksburg, Va., who averaged 19.2 points, 5.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game at Fredericksburg Christian School.

• JT Noellert, a 6-9 center from Bradenton, Fla., who averaged 13.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game at Bradenton Christian School. He shot 54 percent from the field and 77 percent from the free throw line.

• Kevin Stamps, a 6-7 power forward from Lawrenceville, Ga., who averaged 11.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game at Central Gwinnett High School.
