Pickens man dies in golf cart wreck

PICKENS — A Pickens man was killed in an unusual motor vehicle accident July 30 when the golf cart he was driving was struck an automobile near a Pickens County golf course.

According to a release from the Pickens County Coroner’s Office, Carl Edward Williams, 70, of 110 Rockbridge Court in Liberty, was operating his golf cart at Pickens Country Club at approximately 9:50 a.m. when the accident occurred.

The S.C. Highway Patrol has indicated Williams was crossing Griffin Mill Road when his golf cart was struck by a Mercury SUV.

Four others were injured and received medical treatment as a result of the accident but Williams was the only fatality.

Joe Hovis of SCHP stated the driver of the SUV in the incident was a 35-year-old female from Easley and the passengers in her vehicle were ages 13, 15, and 16. All four were injured.

Williams was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. According to Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley, Williams died as a result of blunt force trauma.

According to Hovis, all four were wearing seat restraints at the time of the incident.

Hovis also stated no charges would be filed.
