PICKENS COUNTY — Sen. Larry Martin of Pickens County has been recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) for being aggressive in combating the deadly combination of alcohol and motor vehicles.

“MADD is proud to work with these leaders in the battle against the leading killer on our nation’s roadways,” said Colleen Sheehey-Church, MADD president. “With more than 10,000 drunk driving deaths every year in America, we must continue to push for smart laws that will help us create a nation of No More Victims.”

Martin was one of two South Carolina legislators recognized with the award. In Martin’s case, MADD cited two pieces of legislation the senator helped push through in Columbia.

The first bill concerned video for field sobriety stops and the second involved training for servers in bars and restaurants to help minimize the dangers of drinking and driving.

With this his last session in Columbia representing Pickens County, Martin was hopeful the Legislature would continue to address the preventable occurrences of driving while intoxicated.

“Both of these proposed bills represent a common sense approach of dealing with our state’s high rate of DUI related accidents and deaths. My hope is that the Legislature will continue to focus on these important highway safety issues,” Martin said.

Martin also received the award in 2015 for the successful DUI interlock legislation the Palmetto State.

Rep. Eddie Tallon was the second South Carolina legislator honored in 2016.
