LIBERTY — The last game of regular season play didn’t exactly go as planned for the Liberty Red Devils as they were narrowly beat out in a divisional match-up by Southside Christian 29-27.

Liberty didn’t do themselves any favors by remaining scoreless for the entirety of the first and third quarters — especially when those quarters alone yielded 10 points for the Sabres.

Two trips to the end zone in the second for the Devils managed to raise spirits in the stands and players and coaches alike seemed confident when they headed to the locker room with a 14-10 lead at the half.

A quick touchdown in the third would put Southside Christian back on top 17-14 going into the fourth.

For both teams, the last quarter of play in the game was a slug-fest of back and forth scores. Liberty managed another 13 points before the final whistle blew but it just wasn’t enough.

The game ended with the Sabres up by two.

Overall the Red Devils had a pretty decent season: They went 6-4 in regular play and 1-2 in AA Region II, winding up second in the region behind Abbeville.

Delayed by Hurricane Matthew, playoff schedules have been delayed as other area schools are still winding up their regular season games.

Even with a 1-2 in region ranking, it’s not out of the realm of possibility for Liberty to make a post-season appearance.

You may not have seen the last of the Red Devils after all.

Southside Christian needed the win at Liberty to have a shot at the playoffs. They got it.
