EASLEY — The Foothills Playhouse in downtown Easley has branched away from their usual lighthearted performances to tackle one of the more serious dramas of our time: The Diary of Anne Frank.

The play, which is in its final weekend of shows, premiered last week to rave reviews by theater-goers.

“It’s a serious subject, but the play was wonderfully done,” said Michelle Follows of Easley. “I debated whether or not to take my kids, but I’m glad I did. Everyone enjoyed it, it was very moving.”

The play is a new adaptation of the story and was penned by Wendy Kesselman who was nominated for a prestigious Tony Award for the work.

The play features newly discovered writings from the diary of Anne Frank, as well as survivor accounts — all of which are interwoven to create a contemporary impassioned story of the lives of people persecuted under Nazi rule.

The play bills itself as “an adaptation for a new generation able to confront the true horrors of the Holocaust.”

Due to the subject matter, Foothills is also holding a special performance for local schools on March 23 at 9 a.m. in addition to their regular showings for the general public.

Weekend performances will be held on March 24 and 25 at 8 p.m. with a matinee on March 26 at 3 p.m.

The play marks the last of the playhouse’s Winter line-up before beginning Spring performances with a production of The Velveteen Rabbit, premiering the last week of April.

Tickets to see The Diary of Anne Frank are available at the Box Office on performance nights or online at www.fhplayhouse.com.
