Our children are our future

Did you know there are 681,000 children victims of maltreatment every year in the United States? Most of these are young children ages 0-3 years old, which is why a prevention program was created. Since its inception, it is has shown excellent results. Healthy Families America is an evidenced-based, effective model for early childhood in-home visitation with positive impacts.

Studies were completed for families receiving the program, resulting in a significant reduction in child abuse. Currently more than 75,000 families are served by more than 600 Healthy Families America sites in 38 states, including The District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and Canada.

For this reason, I am excited to let you know that we have a Healthy Families site here in Easley. This site serves Pickens, Oconee, Anderson and Greenville counties. Unfortunately, as over 30,000 children are abused in South Carolina each year, we would like to let everyone know about our services.

Our site is called “The Parenting Place.” Last year we completed 1,524 in home visits and connected parents to services and educational support that will improve their child’s health, development and ability to learn.

Healthy Families is a voluntary home visiting model that is family-centered, culturally sensitive, strengths based, and proven effective in promoting health, child development, and preventing child abuse and neglect. Our goal is to begin at the pre-natal level or at birth, and we focus on helping parents form a healthy attachment to their child.

The HFA program helps improve school readiness by teaching parents the importance of brain stimulating activities. Studies have shown the impact this program has had on academic success and increase in positive learning behaviors. The HFA visiting program also helps parents with their personal goals in education and/or employment.

Overall, the Healthy Families program is an excellent way to battle child abuse by preventing it through education and support. Our services are also available in Spanish. The Parenting Place functions entirely grants and donations. Please consider giving to such a wonderful cause — our children who are our future.
