PIEDMONT — When Liberty travels to play Powdersville tonight, there will be two teams on the field looking for a win to get their record back to even at 2-2. Both teams are 1-2 headed into region play.
The Powdersville Patriots are hosting a Liberty squad that has been stingy on defense over the first three games of the year. The Red Devils hope to keep that trend intact.
Through the opening three contests, the Liberty defense has allowed a paltry 36 total points, 30 of them in one game, and is averaging allowing only 12 points per contest.
For Powdersville, coming in with an average offensive output of nearly 28 points per game, a defense so miserly in allowing points is the last thing they want to see.
Liberty’s issues headed into Friday’s region contest have to do with offensive woes. The Red Devils have struggled to score points when they have possession of the ball.
Having scored a total of 24 points all season, a meager eight points per game, offensively Liberty will need to get on track to keep up. The Patriots defense has only allowed 26 points per game thus far, but the onus will be on Liberty to convert third downs and sustain long drives through their rushing attack.
Liberty opened the season with a 6-3 OT heart-breaker at Crescent, a 30-0 drubbing at the hands of Pickens and a shutout win over Walhalla 21-0. Powdersville was a few mistakes away from a late 23-19 loss to Palmetto, a 10-point win over Berea, and a 41-38 loss in a shootout with Travelers Rest.
