Winter All-region teams announced for 1-AA

PICKENS COUNTY — The All-Region teams in winter sports have been released for Region 1-AA, the home region of both Liberty and Powdersville high schools.

Region 1-AA is comprised of Liberty, Powdersville, Chesnee, Pendleton, Landrum, Woodruff and Carolina high schools and the winter sports are wrestling and boys and girls basketball. The biggest showing in the area was in wrestling with Liberty’s Red Devils taking the region title.

In wrestling, Liberty’s Dale Burrell was named Coach of the Year while Red Devils Devin Johnston (113 lb.), Matthew Frey (132 lb.), and Cole Murphy (145 lb.) all received All-Region honors for Liberty.

At large All-Region positions also went to Kris Murphy (120 lb.) and Jacob Rogers (152 lb.) of Liberty. Powdersville placed All-Region performers in Liam McKinney (152 lb.) and Jesse Stoddard (220 lb.).

The final standings for the season had Liberty winning the region title while Powdersville placed fourth.

In girls basketball, the best performance for the area was a fourth place finish in the region standings by the Patriots of Powdersville. Liberty came in at eighth. Liberty placed no players on the All-Region team but Powdersville saw the play of both Trinity Barkley and Mikaela McDonald rewarded with spots on the All-Region team.

Boys basketball saw no Liberty or Powdersville players receiving the nod. Powdersville completed the season in sixth place and Liberty finished eighth in the region.
