Powdersville falls short against BHP

HONEA PATH — The Powdersville Patriots (0-1) opened their inaugural AAA season on the road at Belton-Honea Path (2-0) and put up a strong fight against the Bears before falling short 32-22 to begin the 2016 season.

The score was a close one but if you look at some of the statistics it would appear the game would have been a blowout, which is a testament to Powdersville’s performance on the road on opening night versus an opponent that seems to be a perennial powerhouse.

BHP’s starting RB O’Ryan Warren put on a display carrying the football as he rushed for nearly as many yards as the Patriots were able to muster on the offensive side of the football, tallying 285 yards on 22 carries. Powdersville had a total of 290 yards on offense on the night.

And in the end it was offense that told the tale as BHP amassed 467 yards on the night, 382 of which came through the ground attack.

Warren started the scoring quickly with a 62-yard TD on the third play from scrimmage, spotting a 7-0 lead to the Bears. After traded punts, Powdersville responded with a 20-yard TD pass from Emery Williams to J. J. Gentile which knotted the game at 7-7.

BHP would fail to convert a field goal and also failed to capitalize on a 12-play drive. The Patriots answered with a Williams to Gentile 48-yard TD to give Powdersville a 14-7 lead in the second quarter.

Warren would strike again two offensive plays later with a 73-yard scamper but following a failed PAT, the Patriots held a slim 14-13 lead. Warren would strike once again in the first half with a 1-yard TD plunge and 19-14 lead at the half.

Following a punt to open the second half for Powdersville, BHP would mount a 90-yard TD drive capped from two yards out by the Bears’ Breeland Simpson and a 25-14 lead.

Powdersville answered once again but wouldn’t have enough in the tank to overcome the BHP lead. Williams scored on a 7-yard run and with the two-point conversion would close within a field goal, but Warren would find the endzone once more to cap the scoring and the final score of 32-22.

Williams finished the night with 198 yards passing for the Patriots.

The Patriots were ready to kick off 2016 and their inaugural game in the AAA Division as they went on the road to face the Bears of Belton-Honea Path.
