CENTRAL — Ranked No. 2 in the AAAAA rankings in South Carolina, the Westside Rams (5-0) lived up to their billing as they traveled to Central to face the Daniel Lions (3-2) and dominated their way defensively to a 41-3 road win.
Coming into the game, the Rams’ defense had been more than dominant as they had allowed opponents just 6.5 points per game. That trend continued, forcing a long night on the Daniel faithful as the Rams would shut down any momentum by the Lions on the offensive side of the ball.
Westside would hold Daniel to just under 150 yards of total offense and 11 first downs.
Special teams were no different as Westside’s Jyston Kendrick had an 84-yard TD on a punt return that effectively closed the door in the third quarter concerning any comeback hopes on the part of Daniel, extending the Ram’s lead to 27-3.
Daniel’s only score came in the first half following a rare Westside miscue, recovering a fumble and turning the error into a short field goal during the first half.
Rams RB Paul Johnson posted yet another 100-yard rushing performance with 121 yards on 18 carries including a fourth quarter TD from the 1 yard line.
After dropping its second consecutive game, Daniel will have a week off before facing Wren.
Westside, meanwhile, is ranked No. 8 in the Southeast according to USA Today and will face Spartanburg on Sept. 23. Spartanburg had been ranked No. 7 in the USA Today regional rankings before falling 35-31 to Northwestern on Sept. 16.
