PIEDMONT — The Wren Golden Hurricanes jumped out to a commanding first half lead and withstood a Woodmont second half comeback to open the season with a 28-14 win.

Following a big sack of Wren QB Jay Urich in the game’s first possession the Wildcats marched to the Wren 2-yard line only to fall short of the end-zone. Wren’s defense came up big with an interception at the one which seemed to take the momentum from Woodmont.

The Golden Hurricanes’ D’Andre Miller’s pick came on a fourth and one opportunity for Woodmont, setting Wren up for a big first half.

Urich, the replacement for now Clemson freshman Kelly Bryant, answered quickly with a 94-yard strike to Bailey Rogers giving Wren the early 7-0 lead.

In the second quarter the Golden Hurricanes turned to the ground game, orchestrating a 59-yard drive on seven ground plays. Nathaniel Ekwere plunged in from the one yard line to boost the lead to 13-0 after a failed PAT.

Later in the second, Urich struck again, hitting Trey Gray for an 8-yard TD through the air, giving Wren a 21-0 halftime lead following a successful two-point conversion. Urich passed to Rogers once again for the conversion.

Woodmont came out in the second half a different team.

Deonte Luster ripped off a 68-yard TD up the middle to bring the Wildcats to a 21-7 deficit. Woodmont QB Hunter King followed up with a TD pass to wide-out Keyshun Kilgore to cut Wren’s lead to 21-14.

Two offensive possession with an opportunity to tie the score found the Wren defense once again coming up with the big play as Tyrese Franklin intercepted a Wildcats’ pass, essentially sealing the victory when Urich reached the end-zone himself from eight yards out to stretch the Wren lead to 28-14 which would be the final tally.

Wren (1-0, 0-0) will go on the road for the second consecutive week to open the season, travelling to Anderson to face T. L. Hanna on Friday. Kick off is at 7:30 p.m.
