EASLEY — Blazing hot temperatures didn’t stop local residents from joining the American Legion Post 52 on Sunday to retire faded and worn U.S. flags in a solemn and dignified ceremony held at Pope Field.

“We chose today, Flag Day, to salute and honor the flag,” said Post 52 Adjunct Paul Smith. “And when I was asked why it takes a ceremony to retire a flag, I responded that it came down to one thing — respect.”

After being inspected by a Past Commander and the Vice Commander, the flags were ceremonially hung for retirement at the approval of Post Commander Dick Meyers.

“Comrades, we have presented here these Flags of our Country which have been inspected and condemned as unserviceable,” said Meyers during the ceremony. “They have reached their present state in a proper service of tribute, memory and love.”

After a brief prayer, Post 52’s Sergeant at Arms Tom Williamson then doused the flags in lighter fluid and set them ablaze. The flags burned quickly, leaving only a column of black smoke and a few ashes behind. All the while, the entire Legion stood at salute. TAPS was played.

With the ceremony concluded and the color guard dismissed, many people hung around to get a glimpse of the 90 mm anti-aircraft and anti-tank gun the Legion is in the process of trying to restore.

According to Meyers, the gun is World War II era.

“We’re in the process of applying for some grants to restore it and turn it into a proper memorial,” said Meyers. “Right now it’s a matter of getting in touch with state and local officials that can help us.”

Between the many programs headed by the American Legion, including Girls State, Boys State and American Legion baseball, Post 52 is heavily involved in community events. Another flag retirement ceremony is planned for the fall.
