PICKENS COUNTY – Katie Crane of Central and Charlotte DeVol from Clemson were among the 29 high achieving Girl Scouts who were recognized with the Gold Award at Presbyterian College on May 3.

For her Gold Award project, Girl Scout Ambassador Crane of Troop 202 renovated a campsite on the Foothills Trail at Bad Creek. She and her team repaired a natural water source to create easier access for campers and hikers.

They also installed new benches and steps, and repaired two fire pits. Crane’s parents are DeWayne Sexton and Connie Crane. Her troop leader is Tiffany Peters.

Girl Scout Ambassador DeVol of Troop 7 formed a new service activity for her high school Beta Club where high school students could tutor with her at a children’s shelter. She created educational games and collected $500 of school supplies to donate to the Helping Hands Children’s Center. She is the daughter of Nancy and Timothy DeVol. Her troop leader is Ellison Reid.

The Gold Award is the highest award that a Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador in grades 9-12 can earn. Having evolved from a long line of elite Girl Scout awards, going back as far as 1916, and previously known as the Golden Eagle of Merit, then the Golden Eaglet, First Class and Curved Bar, the Gold Award was first earned in 1980.
