COLUMBIA — A photo of children at Hunting Island State Park was the top pick and grand prize winner of the South Carolina State Park Service’s Making Memories Photo Contest. The photo, submitted by Eric Rodgers of Liberty, was selected above 11 other finalists in an online vote.

Rodgers received a grand prize package worth $1,200 that included a Tilley Hat or ENO Hammock with straps from Mast General Store in Columbia or Greenville, plus a $1,000 State Park gift card valid toward any campsite or cabin reservation in the system.

The prize package was presented to Rodgers on July 24 at Edisto Beach State Park.

The Making Memories photo contest has been going on for a year, and three winners were selected in the summer, fall, winter and spring in the categories of Landscape, People and Wildlife. The 12 finalists competed for the grand prize in an online vote on Facebook in June.

Rodgers became a finalist in the spring after he won first place in the People category for a photo of his twin children on the beach at Hunting Island State Park.

“My family loves camping and we’ve been to several other South Carolina coastal state parks but this was our first trip to Hunting Island,” he said. “Pictured are my five year old boy/girl twins and this was taken on the morning of our first full day in the park.”

Making Memories received 4,388 photo submissions throughout the year, and an in-house panel of judges selected winners every season.
