EASLEY – The Easley Lions Club teamed up with Gettys Middle School art students to share peace through one child at a time around the world.

“About 66 art students took part in the contest,” said art teacher Mary Young.

Lions Club officials estimate more than 3 million children ages 11 to 13 entered the contest, now in its 30th year.

The winners were recognized at the Easley Lions Club meeting on Nov. 12.

Seventh grader Daniela Lopez took home the top prize of $50. Seventh grader Meredith Brookshire was runner-up and received $25.

As Lions Club chapters around the world band together to promote peace around the globe, the winning posters will take a trip of their own.

“They’ll be sent on, first to Moore, then to Lions Club International in Chicago,” said Smylie Mason, Easley Lions Club Poster Chairman.

Once in Chicago, the posters will be entered in the international contest for a chance at the $5,000 first prize or one of 23 $500 merit awards.

Lions Club International is the world’s largest service organization, with chapters in 194 countries. The Club has a strong commitment to community service, meeting humanitarian needs, encouraging peace, and helping conquer blindness at home and abroad.

Known as the “knights of the blind,” Lions Club programs fund eye research, eye glasses, and eye examinations.
