WALHALLA — The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Westminster couple on one count each of unlawful neglect of a child charges.

Travis Robert William Nix, 19, and Caroline Shaw, 19, both of Kinston Loop Drive, were booked into the Oconee County Detention Center on Temporary Custody Orders.

Two deputies from the Uniform Patrol Division were notified by E-911/Communication dispatchers on a case of reported child abuse on Jan. 22. The child was located at that time in the emergency room of Oconee Memorial Hospital.

The child, 12 weeks old in age, had suffered a reported serious arm injury. The two deputies and an investigator from the Criminal Investigations Division began an investigation, gathered evidence and conducted interviews. The child was placed in a safe environment upon release from the hospital.

As the investigation continued, investigators determined that the injuries that the child sustained occurred while he was in the care of Nix and Shaw. The injuries occurred at the Kinston Loop Drive address and besides the arm injury, included injuries to an ankle and the baby’s mid-section.

The warrants in the case were obtained by the Sheriff’s Office Child/Elder abuse investigator.
