Learning made fun at Pickens Elementary

PICKENS — There’s been some pretty cool things happening over at Pickens Elementary School where students have been getting “hands on” with their studies.

Mrs. Alexander’s fourth grade class got in touch with their inner artistic side when they crafted 3-d bowls in the style of French artist, Henri Matisse.

Matisse, known primarily for his use of color and fluid draftsmanship, was a print-maker and sculptor — but is known primarily as a painter.

He is commonly though of as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts and is credited with significant developments in both painting and sculpture.

PES third graders spent an afternoon learning all about the importance of recycling, water conservation, litter control and storm water pollution thanks to the “Traveling Trash Bash.”

The Traveling Trash Bash is made up of volunteers who present material that correlates with third-grade curriculum standards. It’s a program designed to be a fun and interactive way to learn with “stations” for each topic.

Educational materials are given to each child to take home, thereby extending the outreach of information to families and friends.
