Pinwheels for Prevention start April 1

PICKENS COUNTY — Last year, more than 60 spinning pinwheel gardens were planted throughout the county to raise awareness for Child Abuse Prevention Month, which begins April 1.

According to statistics, a child is abused or neglected every 46 minutes in South Carolina. The “Pinwheels of Prevention” represent the happiness that every child deserves.

For the past several years, The Parenting Place has served as one of the leaders with the Upstate’s “Project Pinwheel,” by raising awareness and planting pinwheel gardens with its many volunteers and community partners.

“Planting a pinwheel garden in the month of April shows a visible commitment to investing in the lives of children and to building stronger families,” said Dede Eller, of The Parenting Place. “All of us have a responsibility to create communities where families and children can thrive.”

As a Prevention Partner with the Children’s Trust of South Carolina, The Parenting Place is making pinwheels available to any public or private institution, business, school, or agency in the area, they said.

The suggested donation is $1 per pinwheel and the pinwheels are available to order in multiples of 25, 50 or 100 with all donations going directly to support families and children in the Pickens County area.

Additionally, The Parenting Place is hosting the 2018 Partners for Prevention Breakfast to be held march 26 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at Tri County Technical College’s Easley campus.

The event will promote education, empowerment and encouragement with featured guest speaker Mrs. South Carolina International Denise Engelbrecht.

“Denise’s passion is to help others break free from the hurts and wounds that keep them chained to their past,” said Eller. “Her message comes from her inspiring journey — she beat the odds, broke patterns of abuse and dysfunction and established life patterns of renewal.”

A Pinwheel Garden planting will take place immediately following program.

There are 100 seats available and reservations are being taken until March 20.
