CENTRAL — Senior Ray Crane was chosen as Daniel High School’s “Student of the Month” for October.

This new recognition at Daniel High School allows the school to commend students for special achievements, both in and out of the classroom. Crane was chosen for unselfishly going out of his way to assist a new student with extremely limited skills in English.

The new student arrived in the United States last month from South America and was having difficulty adjusting as he spoke only Spanish. Crane, an AP Spanish student who has learned to speak the language well, befriended him and has been tutoring him in both English and computer science.

This has been a win-win situation as Crane’s Spanish skills have gotten even stronger through the experience.

“Ray has gained knowledge of an entire new vocabulary of Spanish computer terms,” said Spanish teacher Karen Baber.

Crane has been active in the Air Force JROTC program throughout high school and is a member of both the Spanish Club and the Chess Club. He plans to attend Clemson University and major in International Business and Pre-Law.
