GREENVILLE – Several local residents were among the more than 700 students who graduated from Bob Jones University during the 88th commencement exercises recently held in Founder’s Memorial Amphitorium on the Bob Jones University campus.

Douglas Gutschow of Easley graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor of science degree in Computer Science.

The Citadel

CHARLESTON — Brett Albertson of Easley was named Fifth Battalion P Company First Sergeant at The Citadel and will assume his station when the fall semester begins.

Albertson was recognized during a private ceremony with The Citadel’s president, Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa, The Citadel’s Associate Provost, Col. Mark Bebensee, and The Commandant of Cadets, Capt. Geno Paluso. Albertson and the other new officers were provided with the chevrons that will be added to their uniforms to reflect their ranks.

Coastal Carolina University

CONWAY — Chandler Baldwin of Liberty, a freshman majoring in Exercise and Sport Science, was recently inducted into Phi Eta Sigma, a national honor society. A total of 147 students were inducted on April 16.

Coastal Carolina University

CONWAY — Samuel Shands of Easley and Nathan Klein of Piedmont graduated from Coastal Carolina University during commencement exercises on May 9. Shands graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies and Klein graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.

Newberry College

NEWBERRY — Andrew Schultz of Easley received the Outstanding Senior Music Major Award at Newberry College’s Awards Day Convocation on April 10.

Saint Joseph’s University

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Daniel Ritter of Sunset was inducted into Saint Joseph’s University’s chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, an international honor society for business on April 19. Induction into BGS is the highest academic honor a business student can receive in an undergraduate and graduate level program in a school accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International.

Delta Alpha Pi

CLEMSON — Melva James of Central was one of six Clemson University students inducted into the Nu Chapter of Delta Alpha Pi (DAPi) Honor Society at a recent ceremony at Clemson University. James is majoring in Human-Centered Computing.

Smith presents at research event

ATLANTA, Ga. — Keegan Smith of Clemson participated in the Public Service Research End Event at Georgia State University’s Andrew Young School of Policy Studies in May. This annual event enables Andrew Young School graduate students in the areas of criminal justice and criminology, economics, public management and policy, and social work to showcase their research, internships and capstone projects with poster presentations.

Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society

BATON ROUGE, La. — The following local residents recently were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

Sherli Koshy Chenthittayil, Stacey Garrett, William Leidheiser, Xinyu Lu and Matthew Duncan, all from Central, were initiated at Clemson University.

Sarah Wickham, Shweta Shrestha, Yuzhe Hong, Spencer Davenport and Shahin Gharakozlou Lashkari, all from Clemson, were initiated at Clemson University.

Donna Moore and Courtney Sargent, both of Easley, were initiated at Clemson University.

Karey Wengert of Easley was initiated at Winthrop University.

These students are among approximately 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter.

Lander University

GREENWOOD — Steven “Sonny” Nodine, of Clemson was recently presented with the Betty Williams Unsung Hero Award. Named in honor of Lander alumna and former librarian Betty Williams, the award is presented to students who, through their behind-the-scenes involvement in student life, exemplify a commitment to enhancing Lander campus life. Nodine is a Head Resident Assistant, a 2015 EXPO leader; president of Bearcat Nation, the new student spirit support group, and a Presidential Ambassador.

Tri-County Technical College

PENDLETON — Jackye Murphy, an adjunct instructor in Tri-County Technical College’s Early Childhood Development program, received the College’s 2015 Adjunct Faculty Presidential Award on May 7.

The award is given annually at the spring faculty/staff convocation to the adjunct faculty member who is recognized for excellence in teaching, who has consistently high student evaluations and who supports the philosophy and goals of the College.

Murphy, a Hartwell, Ga., resident and former elementary education teacher in Anderson County School District Four as well as Hart County Head Start (pre-K), has served as an adjunct instructor at Tri-County for the past two years.

Murphy earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and a master’s from Southern Wesleyan University. She and her husband, Patrick, live in Hartwell and have two adult daughters.

Thomas Edison State College

TRENTON, N.J. — Catherine H. Stuckey of Hendersonville, N.C., graduated from Thomas Edison State College with a bachelor of arts degree. She is a self-employed music instructor and teaches both piano and cello. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Stuckey, and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Stuckey, and Mr. and Mrs. David Wilson of Easley.
