LIBERTY — The Pickens County Library System’s smallest branch is “branching” out with a yoga program designed to bring in a new crowd to the library this summer.

“Sarlin, in Liberty, is our smallest location so we — just by size — have the smallest number of patrons over there,” said Amy Saylor, publicist for the PCLS. “But we wanted to do something a little different this year, so we’ve introduced a Summer yoga class.”

Saylor said the program is designed as a beginner class for people who are interested in learning about yoga, but perhaps are intimidated about signing up for a class.

“Yoga’s big right now,” she said. “And if it’s something you’ve been wanting to try, this series is perfect. Very basic and completely newcomer friendly.”

Stretching, strength building, wellness and relaxation are all part of yoga’s core values, Saylor said.

“It’s fun and because it promotes self regulation and relaxation, it’s something we’re hoping goes over well with both kids and parents,” she said.

Two classes will be offered at the Liberty branch, one for young children and one for the older kids and adults.

“The classes are completely free too so this is a good way to try it out and see if it’s for you as opposed to paying for a class somewhere,” Saylor added.

The class is actually taught by Saylor herself, who is a certified yoga instructor.

“I think it’s going to be a good time, and I really think people are going o enjoy it,” she said.

Classes begin on the second Thursday of June, July and August at 11 a.m.

Students are asked to bring a mat if they have one — but a towel will work just fine.

“We have a couple of extra mats, but I’m not sure how many people are going to be there,” said Saylor. “But it’s not like you have to go out and purchase a bunch of new equipment for this class — this is for total newbies.”

Casual and comfortable clothes are suggested.
