CLEMSON — People visiting the Upstate have a new place to stay with the opening of The Abernathy, a new boutique hotel in downtown Clemson.

The hotel, which is named after former mayor and Clemson University professor Larry Abernathy, offers pet friendly accommodations for guests and boasts 41 rooms — each equipped with modern amenities and living areas.

“What sets The Abernathy apart from our competitors is its prime location in downtown Clemson and its unique character,” said Gary Cohen, general manager. “From our personalized service and product offerings to the Clemson memorabilia found throughout the hotel, we want every guest to gain the full Clemson experience during their stay here.”

In keeping with the “Clemson experience,” the hotel staff wears orange handkerchiefs and the university’s famous blue (note: not bleu) cheese is featured on charcuterie boards.

According to the university, Clemson Blue is an artisan cheese, that is, it’s made the old fashioned way. First cured in the 1940’s at Stumphouse Mountain Tunnel, today each 288-gallon vat makes a batch of about 240 pounds. he which is then salted, waxed and aged for six months before being hand packaged.

But cheese aside, the hotel is expected to be a big hit come football season as it sits just a block from Memorial Stadium at 157 Old Greenville Highway. And if catching a game is not your thing, Abernathy is also situated in a place that makes it an easy jaunt up into the mountains or over to Lake Keowee for an afternoon.

“You’re not going to find another hotel experience like this in Clemson,” said Clemson head football coach Dabo Swinney. “If you want to stay in the heart of Clemson, this is it. This is the place.”

“Whether you are enjoying a Clemson-inspired cocktail in (the hotel’s) TAPS Bar & Café, holding a meeting in the VIP hospitality suite, or simply taking in the beautiful views from the comfort of your hotel room, The Abernathy will fully embody Clemson’s distinct brand,” said Tom Winkopp, owner of Tom Winkopp Realtor & Developer, LLC. “We are expecting this hotel to really make a splash, attracting both new and returning visitors to Clemson.”
