EASLEY — A deputy with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office has been arrested for attacking his ex-wife after an altercation in Easley.
According to the arrest warrant, 32-year-old Herman William McDonald of 238 Hallmark Circle in Easley was arrested by Pickens County Sheriff’s Office deputies on Tuesday.
He has been charged with domestic violence in the first degree.
McDonald, along with his girlfriend, went to his sister’s house where the deputy’s ex-wife was visiting on June 17, said PCSO Chief Deputy Creed Hashe.
An argument broke out and things turned physical, he said.
“The off-duty deputy physically grabbed his ex-wife and forced her to the ground,” said Hashe. “Statements from witnesses and the victim allege that he proceeded to choke his ex-wife with his hands to the extent that her vision became impaired.”
A second adult male, who was also in the house, witnessed the attack and pulled McDonald off her.
Hashe said McDonald and the victim share a 10-year-old child who was in the home at the time and witnessed the assault.
McDonald and the girlfriend took off.
“Responding units from Pickens County arrived on the scene within seven minutes but the Greenville deputy and his girlfriend left the residence just after calls were placed to 911,” said Hashe. “The investigation into the incident was concluded late yesterday (Monday) afternoon following interviews with the parties present during the incident to include an interview with the Greenville deputy.”
The arrest warrant states the victim “sustained swelling to the right side of her neck” but further information on her condition including whether or not she was transported to a hospital has not been made available.
A magistrate issued the arrest warrant on Tuesday and McDonald was arrested without incident at his home.
He is currently in custody at the Pickens County Detention Center awaiting arraignment.
