Standoff ends in arrest

PICKENS — A six hour standoff came to an end without casualties on Sunday following the launch of chemical rounds into a residence where a woman had been held at gunpoint.

According to Pickens Police Chief Travis Riggs, officers were dispatched around 8:30 a.m. to a house on Pinewood Drive where Skylar Laine Duckett II, 39, was arrested on multiple charges including kidnapping.

“The female victim came out of a back bedroom, stated that Skyler Duckett has a shotgun, and was holding her against her will,” said Riggs. “The victim was obviously scared and crying.”

Riggs stated that once the woman was removed from the house, officers began trying to talk Duckett out.

“He refused and kept warning officers not to come back there where he was,” said Riggs. “After hours of trying to talk to him, it appeared that he wasn’t going to surrender and we were worried he might take his own life too.”

Wanting a peaceful end to the situation, Pickens P.D. decided to call in Pickens County SWAT for assistance.

“They arrived and tried again to talk (Duckett) out but with to avail,” said Riggs. “They then shot two chemical rounds in the bedroom.”

Duckett was arrested and taken to the Pickens County Law Enforcement Center where he is facing charges of Assault and Battery 1st degree, Resisting Arrest, Kidnapping, Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Violent Crime and Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

The arrest on June 25 marks the latest in a string of incarcerations for Duckett: He was arrested multiple times over the past several years for a variety of crimes including charges in 2013 for Unlawful Possession of a Shotgun. In 2014, Duckett was booked on High and Aggravated Criminal Domestic Violence and Petit Larceny.

Several meth charges were leveled against Duckett in 2016 and 2017 with the most recent being just four months ago.

He is currently in custody with surety bonds totaling $100,000.
