EASLEY — Over a week later, a woman’s identity who was killed in a house fire on Pope Field Road has yet to be released.

On July 2, the Easley Fire Department responded to a report of a residential structure fire with reported entrapment shortly after 2 a.m.

“Upon arrival, fire personnel observed heavy smoke and fire conditions,” said a department spokesperson. “Firefighters were met by an occupant who informed us a family remained trapped inside the residence.”

Firefighters immediately began rescue efforts as well as suppression efforts, they said.

“Unfortunately, the rescue attempts were unsuccessful due to the amount of fire and the amount of debris inside the residence. As a result, our community has experienced a fire fatality,” a statement read.

The department stated 17 firefighters worked for roughly 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

Phone calls to the Pickens County Coroner’s office on Tuesday confirmed that as of July 11, the woman’s identity had not yet been released.

“The loss of life is tragic in any instance and we are saddened to lose one of our community members,” said Easley Fire Chief Butch Womack. “This is our community, our homes and our family and a fire loss hits us hard. I am proud of the efforts of our firefighters and our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this time.”

The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and the Office of State Fire Marshal are investigating the fire.

Officials stated the investigation is standard procedure for fires which involve the loss of life.
