EASLEY — An early loss against Southwest put the future of host team South Carolina District 1 in jeopardy. Luckily for them, these Southern boys just don’t know how to quit — and proved it on Monday with a stunning 8-0 victory over Central.
In Game 4 played on Saturday night, SCD1 fans watched with a heavy heart as the team fell behind in runs early, and never recovered.
In the first inning alone, Southwest scored on a single by Beckett Vine, a double by Jacob Doxakis and a ground out by Daniel Coco — an early lead that the local boys just couldn’t overcome.
Not that they didn’t try: There were zero errors in the field and a home run popped over the fence. But in the end, it was Southwest who came out on top 4-1.
The loss on Saturday was followed up on Monday with a shut out game against Central pitched by four different guys on the mound.
The host team led early with a single by Devyn Bond and a nice double by Joe Freeman to take the two run lead in the first inning. The second inning was mostly defensive, with neither team scoring — but things were just getting started.
With the crowd cheering and up on its feet, SCD1 scored six runs in the third, bringing the score to 8-0. It would remain that way for the remainder of the game.
SCD1 plays next on Wednesday at 4 p.m. against — again — Southwest.
