PICKENS — The City of Pickens will host an all-day family friendly outdoor festival from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 30 which will highlight all that the Pickens area has to offer residents and visitors alike when it comes to outdoor sports.

The event will begin on the Doodle Trail with a half marathon. At 10 a.m., there will be a 5k trail run at Town Creek Bike Park, behind the Recreation Department located on Sangamo Road. At 2 p.m., also at Town Creek Bike Park, there will be a Mountain Bike Race hosted by Upstate SORBA.

All ages are required to wear a helmet to participate. All registrations can be found on the city website www.cityofpickens.com/ventureoutdoors or www.go-greenevents.com.

Throughout the day at the Amphitheater, 114 W. Main Street, the Recreation Department will hold free workshops covering various topics, such as fly-fishing from Southern Appalachian Outdoors, a bee keeping workshop with Bee Well Honey Bee Supply, kayaking workshops on City Lake from Perception Kayaks, outdoor backpacking workshops from REI of Greenville just to name a few.

The 4×4 Cruise-in will begin around 5:30 p.m. with part of Main Street closing. Judging will begin at 6:30 p.m., with trophies for best in show, best club representation, muddiest, biggest tires, and most creative. Be sure to stick around to enjoy the free, live music from BackPorch Communion beginning at 6:30pm and have dinner from the Meat’n the Middle Food Truck, which will be on Main Street.

All funds raised will be split between the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation and the Pickens Youth Athletic Corporation, PYAC. Proceeds benefiting Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation will support scholarships, educational programming, leadership development and the fight against breast cancer which includes their partnerships with Bright Pink and the American Cancer Society. The PYAC is a local nonprofit organization who provides financial assistance to children who desire to participate in recreational sports but whose families might not have the financial means by covering the registration costs and some uniform costs.

Contact Becky Horace at City Hall for information about being a sponsor.
