CLEMSON — The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) officially unveiled a new Clemson University license plate that lets state residents have a personalized Clemson University license plate while also supporting student scholarships.

South Carolina residents can personalize the original Clemson University plate that features the iconic Tiger Paw. This new personalized option is a continuation of the license plate program that Clemson has hosted with SCDMV since 1991. A portion of the proceeds from each plate supports the scholarship programs through the Clemson Alumni Association. Since its inception, the Clemson University license plate has generated nearly $900,000 to support scholarships and alumni programming.

Personalized text may consist of any combination of up to seven letters or numbers and must be submitted for approval by SCDMV before it will be issued. Blank spaces are counted as a character. The only symbol available to use is the “&” symbol. Tag requests that duplicate a plate that is issued to a registered vehicle, that exceed the allowed character limit or contain content that could be considered offensive will not be issued.

The personalized plate is available for $100 plus the vehicle’s registration fee every two years. Fifty dollars from the cost of the plate goes to the school for scholarships and programming.

The original Clemson University T plate, with letters and numbers that start with a T, can still be purchased for $70 plus the vehicle registration fee, $40 of which goes to scholarships. T plate numbers are issued in sequential order by SCDMV, however, personalized plates can also include the T within the chosen seven characters.

Alumni, friends and fans will be able to purchase personalized plates by mailing an Application for Personalized License Plate (SCDMV Form MV-96) to SCDMV Special Plates, P.O. Box 1498, Blythewood, SC 29016-0008. Indicate “Clemson University Personalized” on the application.

Applications for the original T plate (SCDMV Form MV-95 Application for Special License Plate) can be submitted by mail or to the local DMV. The plate is also available for purchase at SCDMVonline.com.

The Clemson Alumni Association is an open-membership, nonprofit organization. Since its inception in 1896, the program has connected members of the Clemson Family, inspiring pride, celebrating achievement, providing service and strengthening relationships.
