UPSTATE — It was a night of triumphs and tragedy for local teams as area football programs headed into week 1.

In Liberty, the Red Devils came off their recent opening loss against Pendleton in week 0 by giving visiting Walhalla a solid reminder about just who’s house they were playing in.

Although the teams had an almost equal number of plays (51-52) the Razorbacks racked up over 90-yards in penalties to the Red Devils’ 45 and a dozen first downs.

Quarterback Parker Burgess went 4-8 for 40 yards and a touchdown over the course of the game and carried it three times for an additional seven.

Leading rusher for Liberty was Kevon Tabron who carried the ball 13 times for 105 yards and three trips to the end-zone.

In the end, Liberty beat Walhalla 45-17.

In Pickens, The Blue Flame are still looking for their first win of the season following the disappointing 20-13 loss against Pendleton.

Pickens took the lead early with a touchdown in the first quarter but the Bulldogs answered back in the second with a trip to the house themselves.

Another six by the Blue Flame upped the score to 13-7 Pickens at the half and fans began to think that maybe this one was in the bag.

Unfortunately, Pendleton came out swinging in the third and put up 13 unanswered points to win the game 20-13.

Pickens (0-2) will host Liberty this Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Having no week 0, Powdersville (0-1) finally got in the game last Friday but it probably didn’t go as fans had hoped.

The Patriots lost to Belton-Honea Path 41-21 despite the Bears having an insane 142-yards in penalties.

Powdersville led in the first with two touchdowns to BHP’s one but the Bears rebounded in the second putting up 13 unanswered points.

The Pats attempted a last minute rally with a final trip to the end-zone in the fourth but another 14 by BHP was too much to overcome.

Powdersville enters week 2 against their favorite team to hate, Wren.

Wren (1-0) is coming off a big 62-34 win against James Island.

Kick off is 7:30 p.m. at Powdersville High School.
