PICKENS COUNTY — Several area council meetings have been rescheduled due to Tropical Storm Irma.

The cities of Easley and Liberty had city council meetings on the books for Sept. 11, both of which were postponed to Monday, Sept. 18.

Included on the agenda for Easley was two second readings for ordinances to amend the violations and penalties section of the local hospitality and accommodations tax section and a proposal to annex just over six acres on Sheriff Mill Road.

Also on the agenda was the approval of a new resolution to rename Peoples Drive in honor of the late Joe Lesley. The new road, located in the J.B. Red Owens Sports Complex, is to be named “Joe Lesley Way.”

The rescheduled Easley City Council meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Law Enforcement Center.

Liberty’s agenda included among other business, second readings to approve ordinances adjusting compensation for Council, training for Council and setting a cable franchise fee.

A first reading amending the city’s fiscal year 2018 budget to adjust the General Fund and Utility Fund’s salary and benefits was also on the books.

Liberty’s meeting will be held at 6 p.m.

In a somewhat controversial move, Pickens County Council decided not to postpone and to go ahead and hold their meeting on Monday — despite the fact there were third and final readings on the agenda.

Typically, a third reading of an ordinance is where citizens have the chance to input their opinion on the matter at hand.

The County defended their position on their Facebook page writing: “… new public hearings would require additional 15 day publication in newspapers, delaying tax bills for at least thirty days. Tonight’s meeting was necessary. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
