Hunter education class set Oct. 7 near Pickens

PICKENS — A hunter education class taught by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources will be held Saturday, Oct. 7 at the Holly Springs Center at 120 Holly Springs School Road in Pickens.

Participants must pre-register at and click on the hunter education icon or call 803-734-3995. For more information on hunter education, visit

The class is offered for free, but limited space is available, so visit the SCDNR website or call for registration.

All residents and non-residents born after June 30, 1979, need the hunter education endorsement and must complete a hunter education course before obtaining a hunting license in the state. If you were born prior to that date and attempt to acquire a hunting license out-of-state, you’ll find that many states now require you to have a hunter education endorsement.

The Hunter Education Program is dedicated to the safe enjoyment of our outdoors. Through this program, students learn about responsibility and ethics in the field, as well as firearms safety. Students are encouraged to bring a bag lunch.

All children under age 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The minimum age to take the exam and be certified is 10.

Participants are urged to arrive prior to the start time and bring a pen or pencil. Classes will begin promptly at 8 a.m. and probably break for about 30 to 45 minutes for lunch around mid-day. Students are encouraged to bring a bag lunch/snack or have a means to get a lunch in that limited time frame.
