State fiddling championship winners announced

PICKENS — This year, in front of a record number of visitors, Hagood Mill was filled with the sounds of music competition at its best.

“The number of musicians entering the competition surged this year,” said emcee Bob Buckingham.

Taking first place in the 2017 S.C. State Fiddling Championship was Jim Graddick from Blythewood. He received $400 and the first place trophy. Graddick plans to return next year to defend his title.

Second place winner in the Senior Fiddle category was David White, who received $250 and the second place trophy. Willie Moore of North Carolina took third place honors, $100 and the third place trophy.

Judges were Michele Turner of Taylors, Brook Lauer of Laurens, Amy Buckingham of Greer, Elaine Graves of Tryon, N.C., and Sophie Case of Greenville.

Sponsors were Cedar Mountain Banjos of Brevard, N.C., Appalachian Ale House of Pickens, Sexton’s Music and Games of Pickens, Pickens Chamber of Commerce, Winsletts Produce of Easley, Captain Charlie’s Reed Grill of Juno Beach, Fla., and Red Mud Stains Fabrication of Easley.

The 2018 S.C. State Fiddling Championship will be held Sept. 15, 2018.

The Hagood Mill historic site is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. all year. The Mill operates, rain or shine, for a special festival the third Saturday of every month. The Hagood Mill is located at 138 Hagood Mill Road.
