Habitat for Humanity campus chapter begins annual Homecoming Build

CLEMSON — The Clemson University chapter of Habitat for Humanity is starting its annual Homecoming Build Wednesday. The project takes place on Bowman field and is the organization’s biggest project each year.

This is the 24th year for the service project, and each year more than 500 volunteers donate their time to build a home for a local family in just 10 days. There are no skills required to volunteer.

“It’s a great way to give back to a community that supports us unconditionally,” said Jordan Nicklos, homecoming build co-coordinator and a construction science and management major from Austin, Texas.

The campus chapter and student volunteers partner with both the Pickens and Oconee county Habitat branches, which provide their own funding, materials and volunteers.

Funding also comes from on-campus organizations like Clemson Undergraduate Student Senate (which provides the $8,500 required to move the home to its final location) and Omicron Delta Kappa honor society.

In all, about $30,000 is raised from donations. Other financial sources include fundraisers at local restaurants and an annual auction that takes place on Homecoming day. All of these are integral to the construction of the $65,000 home.

“Through Habitat for Humanity and the Homecoming Build I have found a way to be a part of the Clemson family that extends far beyond the boundaries of Clemson’s campus,” said Christine Hart of Irmo, a biochemistry major and Homecoming Build coordinator.

The house will be completed and available for viewing before the Homecoming football game against Wake Forest on Oct. 7. On Oct. 8, the house will be moved to its permanent location.
