UPSTATE — S.C. Governor Henry McMaster might be getting a little help on the campaign trail as President Donald Trump is coming to Greenville on Tuesday to lend his support to one of the president’s first political backers.

On Friday morning, Sen. Tim Scott confirmed the event but was unsure of the details.

“I don’t know what exactly his plans are,” Scott said. “I know that he’s coming here to spend some time in the Palmetto State. It’s always good to have the president of the United States in the state.”

Hours later, the Governor’s Office stated there would be a general reception at 6:30 p.m. at Embassy Suites by Hilton in the Greenville Golf Resort and Conference Center at 670 Verdae Boulevard in Greenville.

Tickets for the governor’s campaign fundraiser run $250 a person and must be purchased in advance.

The visit will mark Trump’s second visit to South Carolina since taking office and his first to the Upstate since his campaign rally back in February 2016 at the T. Ed Garrison Livestock Arena in Clemson.

In February, the president visited North Charleston to meet with Boeing executives at the reveal of the company’s new 787-10 Dreamliner.

Despite Trump having an abysmal 38.9 percent approval rating nationwide, according to Gallup, in South Carolina he remains popular — sitting right at 50 percent.

With an ever growing candidate field for the June 2018 Republican primary, McMaster, who ascended to the position following former S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley’s acceptance of a U.N. Ambassadorship, has been stumping hard in recent months and could use the bump a presidential endorsement could bring.

Republicans Lt. Gov. Kevin Bryant, former Lt. Gov. Yancey McGill and two-time state agency head Catherine Templeton have all announced their candidacy for S.C. governor.

The race was joined on Thursday by Rep. James Smith, the only Democrat to have thrown his hat in the ring.

The visit will mark President Donald Trump’s second visit to South Carolina since taking office and his first to the Upstate since his campaign rally back in February 2016.
