New wrestling coach for Red Devils

LIBERTY — The Red Devils will have a new head man on the mats as Nathan Day has been named Head Coach for the Liberty wrestling team.

According to Principal Josh Oxendine, Day comes to Liberty from Battery Creek High School where he coached for 16 years.

“During his time as the head coach, the team won six State Championships, which is the fourth most in South Carolina history,” Oxendine said. “He has also coached thirty individual state champions — fifth most in the history of the state.”

Day’s career record is 404-82-2.

Day’s teams won four state championships between 1987 and 1998, school officials said. He then stepped away from coaching for three years before accepting an assistant role for 14 years while raising young children.

He returned as the Battery Creek High School Head Coach for the last five seasons, winning two more championships.

Day and his wife live in Liberty.

“Coach Day’s record speaks for itself and I can’t wait to see how he is going to build on the standard of excellence that our wrestling program has already established,” said Oxendine.
