‘Women of Accomplishment’ winner

EASLEY — Rise’ Sheriff has been named the 2015 Tri-County Business and Professional Women’s Club and S.C. Business and Professional Women’s organization “Women of Accomplishment” because of her contribution to the advancement of women in the workplace and society.

Sheriff had a child, quit school, and married by the time she was 16. The marriage relationship was unhealthy for her and her children. By the time she was 21 she had three children and a GED diploma. When her first marriage ended, she jumped into another unhealthy one because she thought she needed someone to help her support her children.

It was during this time that she realized she had to take control of her life. She enrolled in night classes at Southern Wesleyan University and spent the next five years attaining a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. She graduated with honors.

Her second marriage ended, she secured a full time job, and for the first time in her life she was financially independent. A year later she went back to school and completed a master’s degree in management.

She said in her Women of Accomplishment application “this is what I do, every chance I get – I encourage young women to go to school, get an education, learn a trade, to be strong – to be careful, to be the best they can be. I encourage them to never give up no matter what – to learn from their mistakes – and be strong.” Currently, Sheriff is the office manager for the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Clemson University. She was also an instructor/educator for 16 years where she taught and advised many of today’s youth. Just recently, she became a mentor for the YMCA Mentor Easley program.

ACSO CERT program recognized

ANDERSON – The Federal Emergency Management Agency has recognized the members of the Anderson County Community Emergency Response Team for their accomplishments in responding to and preparing their community for emergencies.

The group received honorable mention in the category of Outstanding Community Emergency Response Team Initiatives in the 2015 FEMA Individual and Community Preparedness Awards.

Each year, FEMA’s Individual and Community Preparedness Division recognizes the preparedness efforts of organizations around the country. This year 138 organizations applied for recognition. There were 11 award winners and 37 honorable mentions. The Anderson County CERT team was the only CERT team in South Carolina to earn the award of Honorable Mention.

CERT and MSaR (Volunteer Mounted Search and Rescue, a sub-unit of CERT) members are well trained and know how to respond in the event of emergency incidents and mass destruction in Anderson County. The Sheriff’s Office believes that training our teams to assist with mutual aid agencies benefits the entire community. In addition, the CERT members and the Mounted Search and Rescue Team have extended an invitation to provide our services to all Upstate South Carolina first responder agencies in the event more manpower (or horsepower) and resources are needed.

“Anderson County is fortunate to have such a dedicated team of volunteers involved in our CERT and MSaR programs,” Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper said. “This is a great example of citizens helping each other and our community.”
