PIEDMONT — After another disappointing loss at home, the Wren Hurricanes (1-3) just can’t seem to catch a break this season.
The ‘Canes hosted Woodmont (2-3) on Friday with hopes of snapping their losing streak at home but couldn’t quite close the deal, despite putting 27 points on the board.
Woodmont won the game 33-27 and Wren now hasn’t brought home a V since week one at James Island.
In a previous interview, Wren coach Jeff Tate acknowledged his team might struggle this year, having graduated out a significant portion of their starters.
“We’re young,” said Tate. “There’s an awful lot of sophomores out there in some key positions.”
One thing that the Hurricanes do have going for them is senior quarterback and South Carolina commit Jay Ulrich.
“He’s good, he’s real good,” but when asked if the team was going to suffer when he leaves at the end of the season, Tate’s response was immediate: “Not at all. There’s two or three guys right behind him who will be ready to move up at that time.”
This Friday, Wren will try to snag that first win at home by taking on the Palmetto Mustangs.
Palmetto (3-1) is coming off a 35-21 loss at Belton Honea-Path but their winning record could help build the Hurricanes’ confidence this season — if they pull off a win.
Kick off for Wren vs. Palmetto is Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
