EASLEY — Zephan Hunter got a big surprise at school the morning of April 10 when he was announced as the state-wide winner of the Children’s Book Challenge from the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina and EnlightenSC.

The East End Elementary fifth grader was presented with a $500 prize at a surprise assembly in front of his classmates.

Zephan’s book, “Lightbulb,” stood out for both its creativity and understanding of how electric utilities work, said district officials.

“We want to say thank you to the Electric Cooperatives and our local Cooperative, Blue Ridge Electric, for making this possible,” they said. “And thank you to Zephan’s teacher, Cindy Whittemore, who has fostered his love of writing this year.”

“We’re very proud of this bright student,” the district said.
