LIBERTY — The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating after an Easley man was killed in a head-on collision in Liberty on Thursday afternoon.

The collision left one driver dead and another hospitalized, authorities said.

Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley identified the victim as 55-year-old John Alton McDaniel Jr., of 123 Winterwood Lane, in Easley.

Reports state McDaniel was driving a Buick east on SC-135 when he crossed the center line and struck a Ford head-on driving westward just before 2:30 p.m.

The Coroner’s Office said McDaniel was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced at the scene from blunt force trauma after having been mechanically extracted from the car.

Troopers said the driver of the Ford was injured and taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital for treatment. His condition and prognosis has not been made available due to privacy laws.

SCHP is investigating.
