GREENVILLE — Dixon Hughes Goodman LLC collected 3,500 pounds of canned food and raised more than $2,800 for local food rescue organization Loaves & Fishes as part of their corporate Count the Cans campaign.

They were joined in their efforts by Dixon Hughes Goodman offices across 12 states. Dixon Hughes Goodman is a CPA and advisor group.

DHG holds its annual campaign at the beginning of the summer because food banks have a harder time keeping shelves stocked in the summer months. Children who typically rely on school breakfasts and lunches are out of school, forcing parents to seek alternative sources for food.

With that in mind, DHG’s Count the Cans campaign focused on nutritional and protein-packed items with “Fruity Friday” and “Tuna Tuesday.” Greenville’s DHG location collected 1,959 cans of fruit on Fruity Friday and 1,363 cans of tuna on Tuna Tuesday.

“Giving back to our communities is at the core of who we are as a firm and as individuals,” said Matt Snow, CEO of DHG. “I am blown away by the collections accumulated this year and am truly humbled by the outpouring of support from our professionals and our clients.”

In addition to canned goods and monetary donations, this year DHG encouraged its people to donate service hours as part of the campaign, which carried a “Stick a Fork in Hunger” theme.

Over the campaign’s 11-day period, local DHG employees logged more than 72 hours of service packing food, cooking and serving meals. DHG partners and professionals also hosted a neighborhood barbecue and gave personal donations to raise much needed funds for Loaves & Fishes.

“Without the benefit of school lunch, many of Greenville County’s children face the very real threat of hunger during the summer months. The generous donations of canned foods as well as funds will helps us help our local children in need,” said Paulette Dunn, executive director of Loaves & Fishes.

Loaves & Fishes, with the assistance of over 150 volunteers, rescues perishable food from local restaurants, caterers, churches, grocery stores, wholesalers and distributors. Donated food is delivered the same day to more than 94 agencies that use that food to feed the hungry.

Agencies served by Loaves & Fishes include emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, group homes, community centers, senior programs, after school and summer programs for at risk kids in addition to low income housing for the elderly and disabled.
