WESTMINSTER — Daniel High School travelled to West-Oak to face the Warriors with more than a few things on their mind, including the sluggish 0-3 start to the 2015 season, and were able to exorcise some demons with a 42-0 drubbing of their hosts.
For West-Oak, the only positive to be found on the night was the defense’s ability to stop two 2-point conversions by the Lions. Otherwise it was all Daniel all night with an aerial assault and a couple of TD’s from Stephen Kirksey on the ground to emphasize the point.
Daniel took a first quarter 7-0 lead before Kirksey and QB Ben Batson blew up the scoreboard, posting 28 points in the second quarter, giving Daniel a 35-0 halftime lead. The Lions would score one TD in the third quarter to stretch the lead to 42-0, the final score. West-Oak never threatened the Lions offensively and Daniel’s defense was successful in shutting down all the Warriors could throw at them.
Batson would lead the Daniel attack, tossing four TD’s over 40 yards and accounting for 28 of the 42 points the Lions’ offense mustered. Kirksey’s two rushing TDs rounded out the scoring for Daniel, which ended a five-game losing streak dating back to the 2014 season with a loss in the final regular season game and an early exit from the playoffs.
The five-game losing streak was the longest for the Lions since 1976, almost 40 years ago.
Daniel will host Palmetto for Youth Night on Sept. 25. Kick off is at 7:30 p.m.
